2012 Meeting:

A membership and status letter

From Janet Beylin, President, Inuit Art Society

August, 2011

Greetings fellow IAS members!

It is membership renewal time, and I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the happenings at the Inuit Art Society.

As many of you know, we had a very successful conference at Cranbrook in October 2010. Although Kananginak was unable to attend due to declining health, John Houston and Jimmy Manning delivered an exciting and informative program. Many thanks again to our sponsors: the Power Foundation, the Cranbrook Institute of Science, Adventure Canada, and the Detroit Zoological Society.

Thanks to the generosity of our members and sponsors, the IAS made donations of $1500 to the Inuit Art Foundation and of $500 to the Detroit Zoological Society, in support of their efforts to promote the art and culture of the Arctic. We are continuing to investigate other opportunities to give back to the arts and artists of the Arctic.

The upcoming conference will take place in Hamilton, Ontario, October 27-30, 2011. “Bringing the Power of Inuit Imagery to the Marketplace and Beyond” traces the steps involved in bringing a concept from the artist’s imagination to the hands of collectors, and the beauty of Inuit art to the attention of the public worldwide. Our featured artists are Billy Gauthier and Tim Pitsiulak, and we also welcome curator and Inuit culturalist Judith Varney Burch. The proposed program and more details on our speakers are enclosed with this mailing.

The conference takes advantage of our proximity to Toronto to include a day of field trips, designed to intrigue both locals and visitors alike, and drawing on the expertise of Toronto area professionals as speakers. If possible, please plan to stay in Hamilton for an extra day or two, as plans for additional post- conference activities are underway. Full details will be available soon.

On a housekeeping note, the IAS anticipates that there will be a Board vacancy in the upcoming year. If you would like to become more involved in the running of the IAS, please, please contact Lane Phillips, Nominations and Membership Chair, at phillegser@gmail.com . We would welcome your involvement!

Thank you for your continued support of the Inuit Art Society; I hope to see you in Hamilton this fall!

Janet Beylin
President, IAS
